Inshore, Tarpon are one of the most sought-after game fish in Fort Myers, Florida. They are known for their incredible strength, acrobatic jumps, and endurance.

Some of the characteristics of inshore tarpon are:

  • The fight while on the hook: Tarpon can put up a fierce fight that can last for hours. They often jump out of the water multiple times, trying to shake off the hook. Anglers need to be prepared for a long and exhausting battle with these fish.
  • Size: Tarpon can grow up to 8 feet long and weigh over 200 pounds. The average size of inshore tarpon in Fort Myers is around 4 to 6 feet and 40 to 80 pounds.
  • Strength: Tarpon are very powerful fish that can pull hard on the line and rod. They have muscular bodies and large mouths that can easily break or spit out hooks. Anglers need to use heavy tackle and strong leaders to land these fish.
  • Habitat: Tarpon prefer warm, shallow, and brackish waters. They can be found in bays, estuaries, rivers, creeks, and canals. They often congregate near bridges, docks, mangroves, and other structures that provide cover and food.
  • Coloring: Tarpon have silvery scales that reflect light and make them look like a shiny metal. They have dark green or blue backs that blend in with the water surface. They have yellow or orange fins and tails that contrast with their body color.
  • Type of feeder: Tarpon are opportunistic feeders that eat a variety of prey. They feed mostly on fish, such as mullet, pinfish, sardines, and herring. They also eat crabs, shrimp, worms, and insects. They use their large mouths to gulp down their food whole.
  • Coloring of the tarpon in the Ft Myers Florida area: Tarpon in Fort Myers have similar coloring to other tarpon populations. However, they may have some variations depending on the water quality, salinity, and season. For example, tarpon in clearer waters may have brighter colors than tarpon in murky waters.

"Growing up in Northern Ohio in a family of anglers I quickly learned the joy of fishing from my parents and grandparents. There are pictures of me fishing as far back as I can remember. By starting out in farm ponds and rivers then graduating to the "big waters" of Lake Erie and working at a local tackle store, I learned everything that I could about catching fish."
